This Architectural Drawing is section of Column Detailing. A column or pillar in architecture and structural engineering is a structural element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the structure above to other structural elements below. In other words, a column is a compression member. The term column applies especially to a large round support (the shaft of the column) with a capital and a base or pedestal,[1] which is made of stone, or appearing to be so. A small wooden or metal support is typically called a post, and supports with a rectangular or other non-round section are usually called piers. Generally, concrete columns consist of square, rectangular or circular cross sectional area. Columns are essentially required with the primary longitudinal reinforcement and lateral ties to avoid buckling of the primary bars. The distance between two reinforced columns ranges between 3-4 m for small buildings and 6-9 m for sizable facilities where large columns and free spaces are required. For ordinary structures, a distance of 5 m is appropriate, and the maximum span is 7.5, while the minimum is 2.5 m. For more details and information download the Drawing file.
